JUANITA NIELSEN COMMUNITY CENTRE, WOOLLOOMOOLOO
The Juanita Nielsen Community Centre is on the corner of Nicholson and Dowling Streets, Woolloomooloo, three minutes’ walk from Harry’s Cafe de Wheels,
It is named after the famous Juanita Nielsen, a 1970s local resident who campaigned to save Victoria Street, Potts Point, from overdevelopment. She was murdered: her body was never found.
A major upgrade to the centre was completed by the City of Sydney Council in November 2016 incorporating a new lift, accessible facilities, a state-of-the-art community gymnasium including new change rooms, multipurpose spaces, and a new outdoor play area and space for children’s programs.
The refurbished centre was designed by Neeson Murcutt Architects in association with the City. It was recognised at the 2017 NSW Architecture Awards winning three awards, the Greenway Award for Heritage Architecture, the John Verge Award for Interior Architecture and the Public Architecture Award.
The centre offers a range of gym, adult fitness classes, recreational, social and creative learning programs for all age groups and computers with spaces for event seminars/meetings and personal booking hires. Everyone is welcome to join the gym, fitness classes and our creative programs.
The centre’s entrepreneurial free working spaces provide an opportunity for startups and local small businesses to share a space and communicate. They can liaise with other like-minded people, generating ideas and synthesising support in their business development.
