A SILENT SCULPTURE

2 Jul 2020

Sitting silently in Springfield Gardens, Kings Cross, is a Sydney Council sculpture. It has no name, no known designer, and no provenance.

Research indicates it is an artwork called “Reflections”, designed by Michael Snape.

It was installed about 1985 at the completion of the Springfield Gardens.

Springfield Gardens were designed as an urban oasis and a small place for rest and quiet reflection by Sydney Council. The shaded, leafy plaza, with its wooden benches and landscaped gardens, invites passers-by to stop, relax a while, and take time out from their busy lives. “Reflections”, is a bold, contemporary sculpture of two abstract silhouetted figures, seemingly absorbed in silent communion.

It is formed in enamelled metal in a muted rust-coloured red that blends with the earthen colours of the plaza’s neat brickwork. It creates a focal point within the gardens.

Australian artist, Michael Snape, has participated in many acclaimed exhibitions and held successful solo exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and New York.

He has received numerous commissions for major works, art and public sculptures, over 60 in fact.  His works are displayed in galleries, private collections and public spaces throughout Australia.

“Reflections” is one of many Michael Snape public sculptures on display across Sydney including “The Four Elements” for the Yellow House, nearby in Macleay Street, Potts Point.
