It has a colourful operatic history. The site was sold in 1924 by Richardson and Wrench with “fine views” after subdivisions in 1865, 1924 and 1934.

It was designed by the colourful brigadier, “Rosie” Rosenthal. He was a military man and opera singer who led dual careers and enjoyed the classical proportions of buildings. He also designed nearby Farnley Hall.
