Elizabeth Lodge
Elizabeth Lodge 46 Bayswater Road, Rushcutters Bay, is set back from the street by its covered semi-circular covered entrance way. At first glance it is not clear what it is.
Its eleven-levels of 1960s blonde brick design imitate a hotel-motel.
In fact, it is a retirement village, nestled in this high density urban village.
And it was indeed previously the Kings Cross Motel, built in 1964.
The site faces both Bayswater Road and Roslyn Street at the rear on the corner of Roslyn Gardens.
It was purchased by the Church of England Retirement Villages in June 1975. They named it Elizabeth Lodge after the late Queen Elizabeth the second.
They adapted it to accommodate 129 residents with 100 staff with a large dining room and front garden. The underground garage was retained for utilities
Elizabeth Lodge was the fourteenth retirement village to be established by the church and has its own registered nurses, carers, visiting doctors and dental staff.
It was officially opened on 12th July 1976 by Senator The Hon Emil Milivoj Lajovic (1921-2008), Federal Senator for NSW, deputising for the Minister for Social Security, Senator The Hon. Margaret Guilfoyle and dedicated by The Rt. Rev. A.J. Dain, Assistant Bishop for the Diocese of Sydney.
Mr Doyle was appointed the first Warden.
Residents, aged 67 to 101, incorporate themselves into the surrounding suburbs and enjoy an active fulfilling lifestyle.
