Its name is set in stained glass in an arch above the entrance doorway. It sits sedately in McDonald Street, a quiet magnolia-lined cul-de-sac in Potts Point.
The area was sub-divided in 1889 after a wealthy merchant, Henry Challis died. His estate was sold by Richardson and Wrench in conjunction with Hardie Gorman, real estate agents, on Wednesday 2nd October 1889 after subdivision into 45 city residential sites. Properties were erected soon after including a triptych of city villas at 5-9 McDonald Street Potts Point.
Challis Avenue nearby is named after him.
It is not known precisely why Greta was so named but many owners named their town houses after their country properties or areas.
Greta is a small country town on the New England Highway between Maitland and Singleton form where the original owners may have had an association.
Greta is the epitome if its style and period. Tessellated entrance tiles, cast iron lace balcony balustrading, grandly proportioned rooms over four levels, ornate cornices, marble fire places, ceiling roses and original wooden floor boards are some if its original heritage features.
