HASTINGS DEERING BUILDING 46-48 RILEY STREET WOOLLOOMOOLOO

46-48 Riley Street, Woolloomooloo is modernist building constructed in 1938.

It is one of the interesting buildings in the 2011 postcode area that has survived but has been adaptively reused, a trend since the 1980s heritage movement became mor influential.

It was constructed for Mr Harold Hastings Deering, a Ford dealership owner.

And it was used a Ford dealership until relatively recently.

The original owners, Hastings Deering Engineering, later continued as pioneers in the area of mechanisation.

Foreseeing the development needs of the growing nation in 1932, Mr Hastings Deering originally formed the Hastings Deering Engineering Company Pty. Ltd.

Initially, the business was focused on being the sole metropolitan distributor for the Ford Motor Company within Australia.

This focus lasted until 1947, when Deering went on to obtain the Caterpillar machinery agency in Alice Springs. It continues today.

The ground floor of the Woolloomooloo building was originally a showroom with the floor below used for workshop deliveries and the four floors above used for workshops. Each floor was linked by a pair of internal concentric one-way ramps.

The building is an example of large-scale functionalism, a style derived from the 1920s European modernist movement.

Today this local landmark is re-imagined as The Riley Apartments, a collection 22 New York loft style apartments with Art Deco influences plus the convenience of a Woolworth’s grocery store on the ground floor and a private hospital on the upper floors. These changes reflect the changing demographic of the surrounding area and a trend for adaptive re-use of significant buildings.

R&W are pleased to launch these apartments to market and have an initial release of 4 apartments available to view tomorrow from 1-2.30pm. More information can be found at
