HAYES THEATRE CO.
Hear that? Feel that?
That is the sound of music humming and thrumming through our community from Hayes Theatre Co. above the Reginald Murphy Centre in 19 Greenknowe Avenue, Elizabeth Bay.
Hayes Theatre Co. is a not-for-profit company established by a group of industry experts seeking to establish a permanent home for musical theatre and cabaret in Sydney. Named after Australian musical theatre legend, Nancye Hayes AM, the venue is dedicated to honouring the vast history of Australian musical theatre and its practitioners, and developing the next generation of performers, creatives, and producers. Nancye herself is a Potts Point resident and has starred in several of Hayes’ celebrated productions.
This boutique 111-seat theatre has two co-artistic directors, Victoria Falconer and Richard Carroll (see photo above), both dedicated to developing exciting new musical theatre for an ever-increasing audience. They say the most enjoyable part of their jobs is engaging the community and sharing their vision for musical theatre. Victoria and Richard both say that “music and storytelling play an important role in reflecting society back to itself”. Hayes prides itself on delivering a unique and intimate theatrical experience for audiences and on providing opportunities for performers and the live musicians who accompany every production.
The doors to Hayes opened on 7th February 2014 with the first performance of Sweet Charity produced by Luckiest Productions and Neil Gooding Productions in association with Hayes Theatre Co. This inaugural production was nominated for eight Helpmann Awards, winning three awards for Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography of a Musical and Best Actress in a Musical, before transferring to the Sydney Opera House in 2015.
Numerous other productions at the Hayes Theatre Co. have been nominated for and won awards at the Helpmann’s, Sydney Theatre Awards and Glugs Awards. In a very short time, the company has gained national and international recognition for its contribution to the Australian music theatre industry.
As well as its onstage success, Hayes fosters the development of writers and composers of new Australian musicals through Hayes Creative Development. Each year, new works are given seed-funding, mentorship, and workshop opportunities, with the most successful moving through to a full production.
Hayes is made possible through the City of Sydney’s Accommodation Grants Program and assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body, as well as the NSW Government through Create NSW.
