NORMANDY 67 DARLINGHURST ROAD KINGS CROSS
The Normandy apartments at 67 Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross, is officially in the suburb of Potts Point, but is located in the nucleus of a dense precinct within it known as Kings Cross.
It contains 12 apartments in the Edwardian/Federation period style and was designed circa 1928 by Claud (without an e) Hamilton (1890-1943).
Mr Hamilton migrated from New Zealand in 1913.
Normandy’s three levels incorporate shingle-clad bay windows overlooking its busy cosmopolitan streetscape.
its arched awning is a distinctive feature in its setting.
Cafes abound in the area.
Mr Hamilton was highly prolific in the area having also designed the Savoy apartments, Hardie Street, Darlinghurst, Versailles, Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst (1929), Sandringham, Springfield Avenue (1932), Regents Court (Springfield Avenue (1926), Byron Hall, Macleay Street, Potts Point, (1929) and Kaloola, St Neots Avenue, Potts Point.
His career ended abruptly when he failed to pay a Sydney Council debt of $100.
Council filed for bankruptcy and was successful in winning their case in November 1940.
Mr Hamilton died ignominiously three years later, aged 53, but leaving an enduring, distinct architectural legacy.
