OPEN WIDE COME INSIDE ….
“Reading maketh the full person” said William Shakespeare.
It’s an idea that has been adopted by Sydney Council for the 2011 postcode area with their free street library.
There’s a little weather-proof, pitched, hand-made, glass-framed box containing free books for the taking and returning – no charge – available for locals.
Anyone can take a book, any book, ranging from a Dr Seuss colouring-in book for 2-6 year olds through to a Charles Dickens classic or a Shakespearean play.
Locals read a book and then return it for another one in an endless round circle of fun reading, learning and exchange.
Story telling is important as its binds us together with things we have in common and becomes part of our collective community consciousness.
Locals gather round the little box which beckons people to look inside. They discuss their choices.
The little box, a silent sentinel, is a very popular community literary liaison point.
