POTTS POINT PROVIDORE
Potts Point’s newest accoutrement is the Potts Point Providore, 77 Macleay Street, Potts Point. A providore is someone who purveys or provides fine goods for consumption.
This providore is Stephen Harris. He was born into fine food and wine. He is a third generation vigneron. His mother still owns a wine boutique in Bondi and Stephen has several wine establishments in the eastern suburbs and has been operating in the industry for over 20 years. He’s been a sommelier, wine judge, writer and educator, imports wines and exports his own wines. His Potts Point establishment has only been open for four weeks but is already delighting locals.
It offers a European style selection of items including capsicum frittatas, Tramier et Fils Côtes du Rhône red wine, and an ultra-smooth, non-alcoholic Alain Milliat white peach nectar squeezed in the Drôme province in south eastern France. Stephen intends to soon offer more fresh, organic items direct from his own farm, Hebron Farm, on the Colo River about 80 km north-west of Sydney and his market garden. Currently, the farm eggs are on offer, with fresh veggies to come. Healthy soups such as mushroom with truffles and over-sized French eclairs are also available. For breakfast, bacon and egg on brioche bread with homemade relish is uber-enticing. Iggy’s sourdough bread arrives very early and is available from 8am. Cakes and baguettes are “imported” from Francois Artisan Bakery in Bondi.
The most popular items are take-away dinner meals. The menu changes daily but Mael (pronounced Mile), the ebullient French assistant from Brittany on the “wild” western coast of France, advises locals and enjoys providing personalised service to cater for individual tastes.
It’s all an Aladdin’s cave of gastronomic delight.
Stephen opened his Potts Point outlet when the space recently became available. He says “I’ve been heartened by the warm welcome and support from everyone in the area.”It sits on the centre stage of Macleay Street and enjoys winter warmth for sipping morning coffee with complimentary biscotti in the sun on its outdoor patio. Tables are adorned with fresh bouquets of fragrant Jonquils. He uses coffee beans from the Salvador Coffee Roaster, a rare, boutique brand, but very smooth and aromatic. In this Manhatten-esque, high octane, existence at the Paris end of Macleay Street the ambience is reminiscent of Paris’ Eleventh Arrondissement near La Bastille and the Rue Du Faubourg Saint Antoine; full of chic, fashionable cafes, boutiques and galleries.
