WE LOVE PARQUET

20 Sep 2018

“You’ll always be good at what you love doing,” my old headmaster said. His remark easily applies to Ivan Kirkton, Director of “We Love Parquet”, a new, specialist flooring atelier which opened last week in Macleay Street, Potts Point. It’s the only one of its type in Sydney.

He spent a great deal of thought and effort in designing the boutique. The first wall colour, yellow, was too vivid. It was re-done. The second layer complements the showroom panels perfectly. All the walls are emblazoned with wood floor samples, from Australian woods such as Jarrah, Blackbutt, Spotted gum, Tasmanian Oak with Wenge ribboning and Eucalyptus pilularis, to the imported timbers such as European oak.

They are displayed as rare, ennobled tapestries ready to be admired.  French arches and cornices add to the shop’s chateau effect.

The display shop flooring is a herringbone patterned oak with a contrasting dark boarder.

Ivan is a third-generation flooring professional with additional background training as a qualified French polisher. He knows and loves woods.

He has successfully completed significant flooring heritage works for nearby “Boomerang”, Billyard Avenue, Elizabeth Bay, and the “Detroit” homestead, near Adelong, 10km south of Gundagai, owned by Sir Michael Hintze. It’s where HRH the Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, have recently stayed.

Because hardwood floors do not trap dust, pollen, particulate matter or other allergens, they can actually increase the air quality in your home.

All Ivan’s parquet is environmentally sustainable.

His floors can be wiped clean after spillages.

They visually expand hall ways, add natural warmth underfoot with their natural sheen. They create vibrancy in rooms and last for decades. Wooden floors are more hygienic than carpet and add a timeless appeal, flattering internal decors.

Agents say they add value to properties.

Every floor is laid using world-class equipment.

All floors are designed to last for decades.

“They are like a hand-made made violin or guitar,” he says.

He loves the creativity of projects and his clients and already has work booked up in Potts Point.

“The work is physical and challenging,” he admits “but the end result is not just a beautiful floor. It is art. It’s a joy to walk on and a pleasure to admire.”
